Brooke loved the water. A Florida girl and surfing champion, Brooke 19, was born and raised in the ocean and in fact she learned to swim before she could walk. Water is a powerful symbol in Brookes’ life. It represents good and yet sad memories for her. It was water that almost killed Brooke but over time water would also represent what gave her new life.
Several years ago on a dark lit night, Brooke joined her friends for a late night swim. Diving from a pier, Brooke misjudged the depth of the water and dove head first into the shallow depths of the intracoastal, instantly breaking her neck and shattering her spine. Within hours it was clear Brooke was paralyzed and would be rendered to a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
Hearing the news of the tragedy The Boca Raton Rotary Club immediately stepped in to get Brooke back to her first love, the water. The organization pitched in and built Brooke a therapy pool complete with a deck that would offer respite for the rest of the family. In part, because of their generosity, the Rotary Club helped Brooke gain strength and confidence and this past fall she entered college, a milestone that seemed impossible a few years back.
